What kind of water filter do most homes actually need?
Start with what is in your water, not with a product. If your complaint is taste and chlorine smell, a $35–$45 certified pitcher or a faucet filter solves it. If you are worried about lead, PFAS, arsenic, or fluoride, you need reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap — an under-sink RO system runs $200–$550 and a countertop unit like the AquaTru about $449. If the problem affects the whole house (chlorine in every shower, sediment, hard water scale), that is a $700–$1,500 whole-house system. A $20–$40 water test kit or your utility's annual Consumer Confidence Report tells you which of those three you are.
Which NSF certification actually matters?
Three numbers do the work. NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetic effects only — chlorine, taste, and odour. NSF/ANSI 53 covers health-related contaminants such as lead, cysts, and (with a specific claim) PFOA/PFOS. NSF/ANSI 58 certifies reverse osmosis systems, and NSF/ANSI P473 is the protocol written specifically to verify PFAS reduction. A filter advertised as "reduces lead" without a 53 certification behind it is making a marketing claim, not a tested one — always check the model on the certifier's own listing rather than the box.
Does reverse osmosis remove PFAS and lead?
Yes — reverse osmosis is the most thorough option available to homeowners. The EPA names reverse osmosis and activated carbon as the two most effective technologies for reducing PFAS in drinking water, and a certified RO system removes PFAS along with lead, fluoride, arsenic, nitrate, and dissolved solids in a single pass. In April 2024 the EPA finalised the first national drinking-water limits for PFOA and PFOS at just 4 parts per trillion, which is why RO has become the default recommendation for anyone with a confirmed forever-chemical problem.
How often do water filters need to be replaced?
Follow the manufacturer's interval, because a saturated filter stops helping and can release what it captured. Typical schedules: standard pitcher filters roughly every 40 gallons or 2 months (Brita Elite filters last about 120 gallons or 6 months), under-sink carbon blocks every 6–12 months, refrigerator filters about every 6 months, whole-house sediment pre-filters every 3–6 months, and reverse osmosis membranes roughly every 2 years. Cartridges, not the system, are the real long-term cost of home filtration.
Do I need a water softener as well as a filter?
They solve different problems and neither replaces the other. A filter removes contaminants; a softener removes the calcium and magnesium hardness that scales up your water heater, kettle, and shower glass. If you have hard water and health-contaminant concerns, the common setup is a whole-house filter for the contaminants plus a softener (or a salt-free conditioner, if you would rather not add sodium and just want to stop scale forming).
Is a pitcher good enough, or do I need a plumbed-in system?
A pitcher is good enough if your only goal is better-tasting drinking water and your household drinks a few litres a day. It stops being good enough on volume — refilling a pitcher four times a day gets old fast — and on scope, because pitchers only treat what you pour into them. An under-sink or countertop RO system gives you unlimited certified water on tap for $200–$550; a pitcher is the right call for renters, dorms, and single-person households.
